0630091707.jpg richmondjan2011009.jpg Japanese Karate-Do is a way of life for the modern world...our students practice the ancient movements and methods of self defense . Relying on traditions of etiquette, discipline, we teach the art of the "empty hand way". Class structure and curriculum is : Kihon-basic technique exercise of stance formation and block and strike executions,   focusing on balance and power development. Kata- form practice consisting of memorization of prearranged movements of techniques simulating self defense against multiple attacks, and Kumite-practice of controlled sparring against  opponents, with emphasis on timing, distance and control.

We embrace the method of RENBUKAI 's FULL CONTACT KUMITE with protective Traditonal Japanese BOGU to prevent injury while simulating effective self defense combat.

What age is appropriate to start Karate?

Children must be able to focus for period equal to one hour in duration.  So make sure your child attends an age appropriate school prior to taking martial arts lessons. Usually, the same standards of Kindergarten age is the norm.  1st grade is ideal.  Girls mimic earlier than boys at ages 6 or 7. So be very careful when pushing karate do instruction too early such as ages as early 4 years old. Progression will be slow, and attachment issues and focus problems will occur.  The biggest problem will be a general turn off or rejection to traditional martial arts instruction that will last a life time!

Be careful of marketing and contractual obligations when looking for programs an instructors.  If you find yourself presented with a $100 month contract ,be consumer wise. Instruction involving youth should be a process of evolution and not a business contract.  True karate instruction should develop with interest and parental involvement.  It waxes and wanes, but it supported with good instruction that addresses the needs of your family it will persevere, just as your child learns the lessons of focus and commitment to hard work.

A good karate program is non-contractual, where the instructor works with you and your family needs month to month as your family grows and develops.

Programs community based offer a lower cost introduction to a traditional Japanese art based on ethics and proper etiquette and discipline.  Check out the academic programs offered by Portland Shotokan Karate in SE Portland, they walk the talk offering programs for pay but also instruct for schools and social programs city wide. The nature of karate do is this; a person is forced to exert his powers outward but collect his powers inward as well developing the self.. -thoughts from Gichin Funakoshi
